Logo depois do 11 de setembro, eu resolvi passar numa loga e vi este livro. Decidi comprá-lo. Naquele dia, eu abri exatamente na seção que falava sobre a guerra entre os cristãos e muçulmanos. O que me chamou a atenção foi a data do presságio que estava embaixo de uma centúria, que dizia: "Presságio 11, Setembro". Então eu li a centúria que estava em cima do presságio (C2:Q30) e isto me assustou.

Interpretação:
Como interpretar Nostradamus?
Nós devemos entender que o mundo de Nostradamus era um mundo bastante diferente do nosso. Ele não conseguiria descrever o mundo que ele viu, que seria o mundo de hoje, com as palavras que ele tinha em sua época. Mas ele pensou que então deveria se utilizar de uma linguagem que não se alteraria mesmo que o tempo passasse. Deste modo, acho que ele pensou em se comunicar através dos escritos da Bíblia e da História clássica para termos alguma idéia sobre o que ele quis nos dizer.
A minha interpretação:

No seu livro, Jean Charles de Fontbrune diz que este Aníbal seria um extremista muçulmano, não sei por quê.
Eu não sabia quem era Aníbal. Então coloquei a palavra "Hannibal" em inglês na internet e saiu isto:

Aníbal então foi um general de Cartago que lutou contra os romanos nos tempos antigos. Ele foi um dos melhores generais de todos os tempos. Cartago ficava na África do Norte, o lugar onde hoje muitos países árabes estão.
Vamos tentar entender: Osama Bin Laden é um muçulmano extremista e sua casa é no Oriente Médio e ele é da Arábia Saudita, na Península Arábica, que fica na África do Norte. Ele lutaria contra o "Império Romano". Isto será explicado nas próximas partes.

A palavra francesa "journaulx" não existe no dicionário. Também parecia não existir na época de Nostradamus. Eu deduzi que poderia significar "jornais", o plural de "journal". O 11 de Setembro de 2001 estava em todos os jornais do mundo e foi o maior ataque terrorista da história da humanidade, desde que o terrorismo foi inventado.

Esta é a parte mais difícil de explicar. Quem seriam os Romanos? Babel não ficava em Roma. Muito perto do 11 de setembro de 2001, eu tinha assistido um filme chamado "Um Homem de Família", com Nicholas Cage (http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0218967/ ) e neste filme, o personagem que ele interpreta, se referindo a Nova Iorque e aos Estados Unidos, diz "Este é o Império Romano, esta é Roma." Aqui está um texto do jornal "The Guardian" comparando os Estados Unidos com o Império Romano:

A palavra da hora é império. Enquanto os Estados Unidos marcham para a guerra, não há outro rótulo que parece captar o espectro do poder Americano na escala de suas ambições. "Única super potência" é uma definição bastante precisa, mas parece ser estranhamente modesta. "Hiper potência" é de preferência dos Franceses; os acadêmicos preferem "hegemonia". Mas império parece ser a palavra maior, o gorila das designações geopolíticas - e de repente os Estados Unidos estão sustentando este nome.
É claro que os inimigos dos Estados Unidos tem falado sobre "imperialismo" por décadas: eles estão fazendo isto agora de novo, enquanto Washington espalha uma "guerra mundial contra o terror" e ..... O que é mais surpreendente e muito mais recente é que a noção de Império Americano de repente se tornou um debate ativo dentro dos Estados Unidos. E não somente os liberais simpatizantes dos Europeus, mas por todos os lados - da esquerda para a direita.
Hoje um liberal ..... como Gore Vidal, que denominou a sua coleção de ensaios "Estados Unidos O Último Império", acha aliados naqueles colunistas conservadores, como Charles Krauthammer. No começo deste ano, Krauthammer disse ao New York Times, "As pessoas estão colocando para fora a palabra "império"." Ele discutiu que os Americanos deveriam admitir a verdade e encarar as suas responsabilidades como os únicos mestres do mundo. E não foi nenhum império velho que ele tinha em mente. "O fato é que nenhum país tem sido dominante culturalmente, economicamente, tecnologicamente e militarmente na história da humanidade desde o Império Romano."

The word of the hour
is empire. As the United States marches to war, no other label quite seems to
capture the scope of American power or the scale of its ambition. "Sole
superpower" is accurate enough, but seems oddly modest. "Hyperpower" may appeal
to the French; "hegemon" is favoured by academics. But empire is the big one,
the gorilla of geopolitical designations - and suddenly America is bearing its
name.
Of course, enemies of the US have shaken their fist at its "imperialism" for decades: they are doing it again now, as Washington wages a global "war against terror" and braces itself for a campaign aimed at "regime change" in a foreign, sovereign state. What is more surprising, and much newer, is that the notion of an American empire has suddenly become a live debate inside the US. And not just among Europhile liberals either, but across the range - from left to right.
Today a liberal dissenter such as Gore Vidal, who called his most recent collection of essays on the US The Last Empire, finds an ally in the likes of conservative columnist Charles Krauthammer. Earlier this year Krauthammer told the New York Times, "People are coming out of the closet on the word 'empire'." He argued that Americans should admit the truth and face up to their responsibilities as the undisputed masters of the world. And it wasn't any old empire he had in mind. "The fact is, no country has been as dominant culturally, economically, technologically and militarily in the history of the world since the Roman empire."
Accelerated by the post-9/11 debate on America's role in the world, the idea of the United States as a 21st-century Rome is gaining a foothold in the country's consciousness. The New York Review of Books illustrated a recent piece on US might with a drawing of George Bush togged up as a Roman centurion, complete with shield and spears. Earlier this month Boston's WBUR radio station titled a special on US imperial power with the Latin tag Pax Americana. Tom Wolfe has written that the America of today is "now the mightiest power on earth, as omnipotent as... Rome under Julius Caesar".
But is the comparison apt? Are the Americans the new Romans? In making a documentary film on the subject over the past few months, I put that question to a group of people uniquely qualified to know. Not experts on US defence strategy or American foreign policy, but Britain's leading historians of the ancient world. They know Rome intimately - and, without exception, they are struck by the similarities between the empire of now and the imperium of then.
The most obvious is overwhelming military strength. Rome was the superpower of its day, boasting an army with the best training, biggest budgets and finest equipment the world had ever seen. No one else came close. The United States is just as dominant - its defence budget will soon be bigger than the military spending of the next nine countries put together, allowing the US to deploy its forces almost anywhere on the planet at lightning speed. Throw in the country's global technological lead, and the US emerges as a power without rival.
There is a big difference, of course. Apart from the odd Puerto Rico or Guam, the US does not have formal colonies, the way the Romans (or British, for that matter) always did. There are no American consuls or viceroys directly ruling faraway lands.
But that difference between ancient Rome and modern Washington may be less significant than it looks. After all, America has done plenty of conquering and colonising: it's just that we don't see it that way. For some historians, the founding of America and its 19th-century push westward were no less an exercise in empire-building than Rome's drive to take charge of the Mediterranean. While Julius Caesar took on the Gauls - bragging that he had slaughtered a million of them - the American pioneers battled the Cherokee, the Iroquois and the Sioux. "From the time the first settlers arrived in Virginia from England and started moving westward, this was an imperial nation, a conquering nation," according to Paul Kennedy, author of The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers.
More to the point, the US has military bases, or base rights, in some 40 countries across the world - giving it the same global muscle it would enjoy if it ruled those countries directly. (When the US took on the Taliban last autumn, it was able to move warships from naval bases in Britain, Japan, Germany, southern Spain and Italy: the fleets were already there.) According to Chalmers Johnson, author of Blowback: The Costs and Consequences of American Empire, these US military bases, numbering into the hundreds around the world, are today's version of the imperial colonies of old. Washington may refer to them as "forward deployment", says Johnson, but colonies are what they are. On this definition, there is almost no place outside America's reach. Pentagon figures show that there is a US military presence, large or small, in 132 of the 190 member states of the United Nations.
So America may be more Roman than we realise, with garrisons in every corner of the globe. But there the similarities only begin. For the United States' entire approach to empire looks quintessentially Roman. It's as if the Romans bequeathed a blueprint for how imperial business should be done - and today's Americans are following it religiously.
Lesson one in the Roman handbook for imperial success would be a realisation that it is not enough to have great military strength: the rest of the world must know that strength - and fear it too. The Romans used the propaganda technique of their time - gladiatorial games in the Colosseum - to show the world how hard they were. Today 24-hour news coverage of US military operations - including video footage of smart bombs scoring direct hits - or Hollywood shoot-'em-ups at the multiplex serve the same function. Both tell the world: this empire is too tough to beat.
The US has learned a second lesson from Rome, realising the centrality of technology. For the Romans, it was those famously straight roads, enabling the empire to move troops or supplies at awesome speeds - rates that would not be surpassed for well over a thousand years. It was a perfect example of how one imperial strength tends to feed another: an innovation in engineering, originally designed for military use, went on to boost Rome commercially. Today those highways find their counterpart in the information superhighway: the internet also began as a military tool, devised by the US defence department, and now stands at the heart of American commerce. In the process, it is making English the Latin of its day - a language spoken across the globe. The US is proving what the Romans already knew: that once an empire is a world leader in one sphere, it soon dominates in every other.
But it is not just specific tips that the US seems to have picked up from its ancient forebears. Rather, it is the fundamental approach to empire that echoes so loudly. Rome understood that, if it is to last, a world power needs to practise both hard imperialism, the business of winning wars and invading lands, and soft imperialism, the cultural and political tricks that work not to win power but to keep it.
So Rome's greatest conquests came not at the end of a spear, but through its power to seduce conquered peoples. As Tacitus observed in Britain, the natives seemed to like togas, baths and central heating - never realising that these were the symbols of their "enslavement". Today the US offers the people of the world a similarly coherent cultural package, a cluster of goodies that remain reassuringly uniform wherever you are. It's not togas or gladiatorial games today, but Starbucks, Coca-Cola, McDonald's and Disney, all paid for in the contemporary equivalent of Roman coinage, the global hard currency of the 21st century: the dollar.
When the process works, you don't even have to resort to direct force; it is possible to rule by remote control, using friendly client states. This is a favourite technique for the contemporary US - no need for colonies when you have the Shah in Iran or Pinochet in Chile to do the job for you - but the Romans got there first. They ruled by proxy whenever they could. We, of all people, should know: one of the most loyal of client kings ruled right here, in the southern England of the first century AD.
His name was Togidubnus and you can still visit the grand palace that was his at Fishbourne in Sussex. The mosaic floors, in remarkable condition, are reminders of the cool palatial quarters where guests would have gathered for preprandial drinks or a perhaps an audience with the king. Historians now believe that Togidubnus was a high-born Briton educated in Rome, brought back to Fishbourne and installed as a pro-Roman puppet. Just as Washington's elite private schools are full of the "pro-western" Arab kings, South American presidents or African leaders of the future, so Rome took in the heirs of the conquered nations' top families, preparing them for lives as rulers in Rome's interest.
And Togidubnus did not let his masters down. When Boudicca led her uprising against the Roman occupation in AD60, she made great advances in Colchester, St Albans and London - but not Sussex. Historians now believe tthat was because Togidubnus kept the native Britons under him in line. Just as Hosni Mubarak and Pervez Musharraf have kept the lid on anti-American feeling in Egypt and Pakistan, Togidubnus did the same job for Rome nearly two millennia ago.
Not that it always worked. Rebellions against the empire were a permanent fixture, with barbarians constantly pressing at the borders. Some accounts suggest that the rebels were not always fundamentally anti-Roman; they merely wanted to share in the privileges and affluence of Roman life. If that has a familiar ring, consider this: several of the enemies who rose up against Rome are thought to have been men previously nurtured by the empire to serve as pliant allies. Need one mention former US protege Saddam Hussein or one-time CIA trainee Osama bin Laden?
Rome even had its own 9/11 moment. In the 80s BC, Hellenistic king Mithridates called on his followers to kill all Roman citizens in their midst, naming a specific day for the slaughter. They heeded the call - and killed 80,000 Romans in local communities across Greece. "The Romans were incredibly shocked by this," says ancient historian Jeremy Paterson of Newcastle University. "It's a little bit like the statements in so many of the American newspapers since September 11: 'Why are we hated so much?' "
Internally, too, today's United States would strike many Romans as familiar terrain. America's mythologising of its past - its casting of founding fathers Washington and Jefferson as heroic titans, its folk-tale rendering of the Boston Tea Party and the war of independence - is very Roman. That empire, too, felt the need to create a mythic past, starred with heroes. For them it was Aeneas and the founding of Rome, but the urge was the same: to show that the great nation was no accident, but the fruit of manifest destiny.
And America shares Rome's conviction that it is on a mission sanctioned from on high. Augustus declared himself the son of a god, raising a statue to his adoptive father Julius Caesar on a podium alongside Mars and Venus. The US dollar bill bears the words "In God we trust" and US politicians always like to end their speeches with "God bless America."
Even that most modern American trait, its ethnic diversity, would make the Romans feel comfortable. Their society was remarkably diverse, taking in people from all over the world - and even promising new immigrants the chance to rise to the very top (so long as they were from the right families). While America is yet to have a non-white president, Rome boasted an emperor from north Africa, Septimius Severus. According to classicist Emma Dench, Rome had its own version of America's "hyphenated" identities. Like the Italian-Americans or Irish-Americans of today, Rome's citizens were allowed a "cognomen" - an extra name to convey their Greek-Roman or British-Roman heritage: Tiberius Claudius Togidubnus.
There are some large differences between the two empires, of course - starting with self-image. Romans revelled in their status as masters of the known world, but few Americans would be as ready to brag of their own imperialism. Indeed, most would deny it. But that may come down to the US's founding myth. For America was established as a rebellion against empire, in the name of freedom and self-government. Raised to see themselves as a rebel nation and plucky underdog, they can't quite accept their current role as master.
One last factor scares Americans from making a parallel between themselves and Rome: that empire declined and fell. The historians say this happens to all empires; they are dynamic entities that follow a common path, from beginning to middle to end.
"What America will need to consider in the next 10 or 15 years," says Cambridge classicist Christopher Kelly, "is what is the optimum size for a nonterritorial empire, how interventionist will it be outside its borders, what degree of control will it wish to exercise, how directly, how much through local elites? These were all questions which pressed upon the Roman empire."
Anti-Americans like to believe that an operation in Iraq might be proof that the US is succumbing to the temptation that ate away at Rome: overstretch. But it's just as possible that the US is merely moving into what was the second phase of Rome's imperial history, when it grew frustrated with indirect rule through allies and decided to do the job itself. Which is it? Is the US at the end of its imperial journey, or on the brink of its most ambitious voyage? Only the historians of the future can tell us that.

The place where they built the Tower was called Babylon, on account of the confusion of languages. Here we have again the statement as in Ge that the meaning of Babel is "confusion." This, as is well known, is based upon the purely Hebrew etymological law, which makes balal, "to confuse," or "mingle," assume a reduplicate form; but as far as the cuneiform inscriptions, which are now very numerous, give us information, Babel, from baldlu, "to mingle" (the root in question), was an impossibility. I believe the Twin Towers and the sky crappers of today are the new Babel towers, mostly when we think about commercial centers in big cities. This name “World Trade Center” affirms well the universal character of this building. People from all over the world were there, speaking numerous tongues. It was a very high building that would reach the skies.

This last picture is very interesting. It makes one think the Tower of Babel was like the Mayan pyramids and that they were places where the flying saucers landed. UFO believers, which are scattered through many religions, cults and non-religious groups, such as New Age, Freemasonry (oh, yes), Gnosis, Ramatis, Hollow Earth, Zecharia Sitchin, believed the ancient pagan gods were ETs. This must be explained with more details in separate sections about the Occult and the Bible. And I must say, I was once in New Age (Ramatis), I used to participate in a New Age site sending them enormous amounts of information about UFOs, ancient mythology, Egyptian gods and – prophecies! Yes, the pagans do believe in prophecies. But not like Christians.

Babel, Tower of (babel, gate of God), Babylon, the Greek form of the Hebrew word bavel, which is closely allied and probably derived from the Akkadian babilu or "gate of God." The date of its foundation is still disputed. The connection between Akkad, Calneh, Erech, and Babylon (Gen. 10:10) indicates a period at least as early as 3000 B.C. Babylon may have been founded originally by the Sumerians, and an early tablet recorded that Sargon of Akkad (c. 2400) destroyed Babylon.

What is the role of Freemasonry in this prophecy and other prophecies? It has got to do with all.
Freemasonry is Mystery Babylon.
They believe and praise Babylon and its gods. Our Lady and others keep saying that and still, many don´t want to see it. They prefer to be warm and to say “Well, let´s not preach and convert people, let´s not reproach someone else´s belief. Let´s not see the evil.” When God says the warm will be vomited, it is that people now are letting the paganism and other beliefs to be spread, they do not reveal their evil parts and their kids and friends and family are getting into it and they will go to hell because of it. A country in mourning poured its grief into prayer and
defiant chants, showing unity in the flicker of thousands of candles at vigils
across America.
As dusk fell yesterday on a day of remembrance, strangers
congregated a few miles from the devastation in New York and they
gathered as far away as Alaska to show solidarity. On the Las Vegas Strip, the
lights went down.
About 500 people joined together in the rain Friday night at
Denver's Washington Park, holding candles and softly singing "Amazing Grace" and
"America the Beautiful."
"I brought my
6-year-old here tonight because it's important that she knows there are more
good people in the world than bad," said Terra Avila, 29, of Denver.
About 75 people lighted candles in a
park on Seattle's Queen Anne Hill as the sun set behind the
Olympic Mountains. The crowd had a clear view of the Space Needle, topped by an
American flag at half-staff.
Anne Gauthier, 28, an executive assistant at Microsoft Corp.,
said she came out "to say yes, you have hurt us more deeply than you ever did
before but you're not going to break us."
In Las Vegas, blackjack dealers stopped dealing cards and
roulette wheels went still at some casinos. Many casinos on the Strip turned off
their exterior lights.
About 2,500 candles lined a marble balcony and the steps of
the Rhode Island Statehouse, illuminating the lawn of the historic building
where thousands gathered for a nighttime service.
Ed and Tracy Berry and their two young children lighted five
candles on their quiet street in north Dallas, responding
to e-mails sent by their church and a friend.
"We told our 5-year-old that a terrible accident had happened
and lots of people are hurt," Ed Berry said.
On Manhattan's Upper West Side, hundreds met at a Mexican
restaurant that handed out candles and flags. People cheered and sang "God Bless
America" as military jets flew overhead.
"I've been in the house for the last three days in shock.
This is my first day out," said Millie Cintron, a Wall Street worker who saw the
World Trade Center towers collapse.
A widespread Internet message had urged people to light
candles Friday to "show the world that Americans are strong and united together
against terrorism."
President Bush had
called for the day of remembrance to memorialize the victims of Tuesday's
terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center and Pentagon.
Before the candlelight vigils Friday, there were prayers.
The mighty gathered in
Washington. Bush attended a service at the National
Cathedral with a who's who of American politics, including four former
presidents.
At the Oklahoma City National Memorial, the site of the 1995
bombing of the Alfred P Murrah Federal Building, several hundred people
sang under an American elm that survived that blast.
Outside Los Angeles' city hall, Arlene Mills, 40, and
her husband wore red, white and blue bandanas and carried a sign that read "God
Bless America. R.I.P. Victims of Terrorists."
Tears flowed from behind Mills' dark sunglasses.
"You realize that being a Democrat,
Republican, New Yorker or from Los Angeles doesn't matter," she said. "Today
from this day on, everybody is just an American."
Sayeed Siddiqui, president of the Islamic Society of Greater
Houston, addressed his comments at a memorial service to "fellow Americans."
Muslims have been targets of revenge assaults since the attacks.
"God help us fight hate and change it
with our hearts filled with compassion," Siddiqui said.
At Oracle Corp., the Silicon Valley software giant, 5,000
employees held hands around an ornamental lake outside their offices and sang
"America the Beautiful."
On the Mexican
border, U.S. customs and immigration agents stopped traffic
going into the United States for one minute.
At the National Cathedral, an Episcopal bishop urged people
to use the church as a "container for your grief." But around the country, many
Americans were more consumed by anger than sorrow.
"I'm supposed to be a Christian, but my prayers are for
revenge," said Al Thompson, who attended a Mass at St. Louis Cathedral in
New Orleans. "What's the saying? God may forgive them

(AP) — The United States is pouring military firepower into the Persian Gulf
area in preparation for President Bush's promised war on terrorism. The Air
Force is sending B-52 and B-1 bombers and fighter jets while mobilizing
thousands of reservists, and the Army is readying its commando forces.
Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said Thursday that although the
Gulf is the focus of U.S. deployments right now, the coming fight will look
nothing like the knockout punch U.S.-led forces delivered in the 1991 Gulf War.
Nor is the use of nuclear weapons being contemplated by the president, a senior
Bush administration official said, because terrorist cells are fought on a small
scale.
What we're engaged in is something that is very, very
different from World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf War, Kosovo, Bosnia, the
kinds of things people think of when they use the word `war,' or `campaign,' or
`conflict,''' Rumsfeld said.
He said fighting terrorism will take a long
time and, to a degree not seen before, will require economic, financial,
diplomatic and political action in addition to military force.
It also
will require support from the American public, for whom the prospect of war was
brought into clearer focus by the Pentagon's announcement Thursday that 5,131
members of the Air Force National Guard and Air Force Reserve have been ordered
to active duty. They are from 29 units in 24 states and the District of
Columbia.
Among the mobilized reserves are a B-52 unit from Barksdale
Air Force Base, La., and a B-1 bomber unit from Robins Air Force Base, Ga. Most
of the rest of the activated units are to be used to strength U.S. continental
air defenses.
Rumsfeld has said he expects 35,500 members of the Reserve
and National Guard to be called up.
The Pentagon is repositioning
military forces to prepare for action, Rumsfeld said, but would not provide
details. Other officials said both active and reserve forces are beginning to
move.
The Air Force is sending 100 to 130 aircraft to the Gulf region, a
senior defense official said, including fighters and B-1 and B-52 bombers. Also,
tanker aircraft began deploying from U.S. bases Thursday to establish an
air
bridge'' for refueling fighters and bombers as they cross the Atlantic.
The Air Force has fighter aircraft in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. The Army
keeps a virtually permanent presence in Kuwait with soldiers and war materiel
sufficient to equip an additional 5,000 troops.
The Navy's 5th Fleet
headquarters is on the Gulf island emirate Bahrain. It normally keeps one
aircraft carrier on patrol in the Gulf year-round. It now has one in the Gulf
and one nearby in the Arabian Sea; a third — the USS Theodore Roosevelt — left
port at Norfolk, Va., on Wednesday en route to the Mediterranean. Each carrier
has 75 aircraft aboard and is accompanied by a dozen warships.
A
contingent of about 2,100 Marines also is in the Gulf, and a similar-size unit
is headed in that direction.
The USS Kitty Hawk, the only U.S. aircraft
carrier stationed in the western Pacific, left its port in Yokosuka, Japan,
early Friday morning local time for an undisclosed location. The carrier has a
crew of 5,500 sailors, naval aviators and Marines and typically carries 70
aircraft.
The guided-missile cruiser USS Vincennes and guided-missile
destroyer USS Curtis Wilbur departed Yokosuka on Monday. Both can carry Tomahawk
cruise missiles as well as anti-aircraft and anti-submarine missiles.
Army Secretary Thomas White said the Army is playing a part in the
buildup of U.S. forces abroad and that the Army is prepared to conduct
sustained land combat operations.''
The Army Special
Operations Command at Fort Bragg, N.C., said Thursday it had received a
deployment order. Details were not provided. The command has a wide array of
specialized units, including the 75th Ranger Regiment, the 160th Special
Operations Aviation Regiment, psychological operations units and seven Special
Forces Groups spread out across the United States and the world.
Air
Force officials said eight B-52 bombers will deploy from the 917th Bomb Wing, an
Air Force Reserve unit at Barksdale Air Force Base, La., and Minot Air Force
Base, N.D., also will contribute B-52s.
Air Force refueling aircraft
began deploying Thursday, including KC-135s from Fairchild Air Force Base,
Wash., officials said. Grand Forks Air Force Base, N.D., with KC-135 refueling
planes, also received deployment orders.
Also Thursday, Rumsfeld said
the administration was reconsidering the name initially given to the military
deployment,
Operation Infinite Justice,'' because in the Islamic faith only
Allah can provide infinite justice.
The administration is considering
various options, of which a large-scale invasion of Afghanistan is considered
least likely by many defense experts. Many believe the insertion into
Afghanistan of small teams of special operations forces, such as Army Rangers,
is more likely in the effort to hunt down terrorists.

Dionysus or Bacchus was the god of fruitfulness and vegetation and he was also known as a god of wine and ecstasy; his cult represented a reversion to pre-Hellenic Minoan nature religion. According to the most popular tradition, Dionysus was the son of Zeus and Semele. Hera, Zeus’ wife, out of jealousy persuaded Semele to prove her lover's divinity by requesting him to appear in his real person. Zeus complied, but his power was too great for the mortal Semele, who was blasted with thunderbolts. Bacchus, God of wine for the Romans, Dionysus, God of wine for the Greek, was the son of Jupiter (Zeus) and Semele. Juno (Hera), to gratify her resentment against Semele, contrived a plan for her destruction. Jove took the infant Bacchus and gave him in charge to the Nysacan nymphs and for their care were rewarded by Jupiter. When Bacchus grew up he discovered the culture of the vine and the mode of extracting its precious juice. (CBS) There are secrets that
George W. Bush guards at least as carefully as any entrusted to a president.
He's forbidden to share these secrets even with the vice president --
secrets he has held ever since his days as an undergraduate at Yale.
In
his senior year, Mr. Bush - like his father and his grandfather - belonged to
Skull and Bones, an elite secret society that includes some of the most powerful
men of the 20th century.
All Bonesmen, as they're called, are forbidden
to reveal what goes on in their inner sanctum, the windowless building on the
Yale campus that is called "The Tomb."
There are conspiracy theorists
who see Skull and Bones behind everything that goes wrong, and occasionally even
right in the world.
Apart from presidents, Bones has included cabinet
officers, spies, Supreme Court justices, statesmen and captains of industry -
and often their sons, and lately their daughters, too.
It’s a social and
political network like no other. And they've responded to outsiders with utter
silence – until an enterprising Yale graduate, Alexandra Robbins, managed to
penetrate the wall of silence in her book, “Secrets of the Tomb.”

”I spoke with about 100 members of
Skull and Bones and they were members who were tired of the secrecy, and that's
why they were willing to talk to me,” says Robbins. “But probably twice that
number hung up on me, harassed me, or threatened me.”
Secret or not,
Skull and Bones is as essential to Yale as the Whiffenpoofs, the tables down at
a pub called Mory's, and the Yale mascot - that ever-slobbering bulldog.
Skull and Bones, with all its ritual and macabre relics, was founded in
1832 as a new world version of secret student societies that were common in
Germany at the time. Since then, it has chosen or "tapped" only 15 senior
students a year who become patriarchs when they graduate -- lifetime members of
the ultimate old boys' club.
“Skull and Bones is so tiny. That's what
makes this staggering,” says Robbins. “There are only 15 people a year, which
means there are about 800 living members at any one time.”
But a lot of
Bonesmen have gone on to positions of great power, which Robbins says is the
main purpose of this secret society: to get as many members as possible into
positions of power.
“They do have many individuals in influential
positions,” says Robbins. “And that's why this is something that we need to know
about.”
President Bush has tapped five fellow Bonesmen to join his
administration. Most recently, he selected William Donaldson, Skull and Bones
1953, the head of the Securities and Exchange Commission. Like the President,
he's taken the Bones oath of silence.
Ron Rosenbaum, author and columnist
for the New York Observer, has become obsessed with cracking that code of
secrecy.
“I think there is a deep and legitimate distrust in America for
power and privilege that are cloaked in secrecy. It's not supposed to be the way
we do things,” says Rosenbaum. “We're supposed to do things out in the open in
America. And so that any society or institution that hints that there is
something hidden is, I think, a legitimate subject for investigation.”
His investigation is a 30-year obsession dating back to his days as a
Yale classmate of George W. Bush. Rosenbaum, a self-described undergraduate
nerd, was certainly not a contender for Bones. But he was fascinated by its
weirdness.
“It's this sepulchral, tomblike, windowless, granite,
sandstone bulk that you can't miss. And I lived next to it,” says Rosenbaum. “I
had passed it all the time. And during the initiation rites, you could hear
strange cries and whispers coming from the Skull and Bones tomb.”
Despite a lifetime of attempts to get inside, the best Rosenbaum could
do was hide out on the ledge of a nearby building a few years ago to videotape a
nocturnal initiation ceremony in the Tomb's courtyard.
“A woman holds a
knife and pretends to slash the throat of another person lying down before them,
and there's screaming and yelling at the neophytes,” he says.
Robbins
says the cast of the initiation ritual is right out of Harry Potter meets
Dracula: “There is a devil, a Don Quixote and a Pope who has one foot sheathed
in a white monogrammed slipper resting on a stone skull. The initiates are led
into the room one at a time. And once an initiate is inside, the Bonesmen shriek
at him. Finally, the Bonesman is shoved to his knees in front of Don Quixote as
the shrieking crowd falls silent. And Don Quixote lifts his sword and taps the
Bonesman on his left shoulder and says, ‘By order of our order, I dub thee
knight of Euloga.’"
It’s a lot of mumbo-jumbo, says Robbins, but it
means a lot to the people who are in it.
“Prescott Bush, George W's
grandfather, and a band of Bonesmen, robbed the grave of Geronimo, took the
skull and some personal relics of the Apache Chief and brought them back to the
tomb,” says Robbins. “There is still a glass case, Bonesmen tell me, within the
tomb that displays a skull that they all refer to as Geronimo.”
“The
preoccupation with bones, mortality, with coffins, lying in coffins, standing
around coffins, all this sort of thing I think is designed to give them the
sense that, and it's very true, life is short,” says Rosenbaum. “You can spend
it, if you have a privileged background, enjoying yourself, contributing
nothing, or you can spend it making a contribution.”
And plenty of
Bonesmen have made a contribution, from William Howard Taft, the 27th President;
Henry Luce, the founder of Time Magazine; and W. Averell Harriman, the diplomat
and confidant of U.S. presidents.
“What's important about the
undergraduate years of Skull and Bones, as opposed to fraternities, is that it
imbues them with a kind of mission for moral leadership,” says Rosenbaum. “And
it's something that they may ignore for 30 years of their life, as George W.
Bush seemed to successfully ignore it for quite a long time. But he came back to
it.”
Mr. Bush, like his father and grandfather before him, has refused
to talk openly about Skull and Bones. But as a Bonesman, he was required to
reveal his innermost secrets to his fellow Bones initiates.
“They're
supposed to recount their entire sexual histories in sort of a dim, a dimly-lit
cozy room. The other 14 members are sitting on plush couches, and the lights are
dimmed,” says Robbins. “And there's a fire roaring. And the, this activity is
supposed to last anywhere from between one to three hours.”
What’s the point of this?
”I
believe the point of the year in the tomb is to forge such a strong bond between
these 15 new members that after they graduate, for them to betray Skull and
Bones would mean they'd have to betray their fourteen closest friends,” says
Robbins.
One can't help but make certain comparisons with the mafia, for
example. Secret society, bonding, stakes may be a little higher in one than the
other. But everybody knows everything about everybody, which is a form of
protection.
“I think Skull and Bones has had slightly more success than
the mafia in the sense that the leaders of the five families are all doing 100
years in jail, and the leaders of the Skull and Bones families are doing four
and eight years in the White House,” says Rosenbaum.
Bones is not
restricted to the Republican Party. Yet another Bonesman has his eye on the Oval
Office: Senator John Kerry, Democrat, Skull & Bones 1966.
“It is
fascinating isn't it? I mean, again, all the people say, ‘Oh, these societies
don't matter. The Eastern Establishment is in decline.’ And you could not find
two more quintessential Eastern establishment, privileged guys,” says Rosenbaum.
“I remember when I was a nerdy scholarship student in the reserve book room at,
at the Yale Library, and John Kerry, who at that point styled himself ‘John F.
Kerry’ would walk in.”
“There was always a little buzz,” adds Rosenbaum.
“Because even then he was seen to be destined for higher things. He was head of
the Yale Political Union, and a tap for Skull and Bones was seen as the natural
sequel to that.”
David Brooks, a conservative
commentator who has published a book on the social dynamics of the upwardly
mobile, says that while Skull & Bones may be elite and secret, it's anything
but exciting.
“My view of secret societies is they're like the first
class cabin in airplanes. They're really impressive until you get into them, and
then once you're there they're a little dull. So you hear all these conspiracy
theories about Skull and Bones,” says Brooks.
“And to me, to be in one
of these organizations, you have to have an incredibly high tolerance for tedium
'cause you're sittin' around talking, talking, and talking. You're not running
the world, you're just gassing.”
Gassing or not, the best-connected
white man's club in America has moved reluctantly into the 21st Century.
“Skull and Bones narrowly endorsed admitting women,” says Robbins. “The
day before these women were supposed to be initiated, a group of Bonesmen,
including William F. Buckley, obtained a court order to block the initiation
claiming that letting women into the tomb would lead to date rape. Again more
legal wrangling; finally it came down to another vote and women were admitted
and initiated.”
